Vimy
100 years since…

On the hill at Vimy
as far as the eye can see
boots and shoes stand
two by two upright and proud.
Here is where the soldiers stood
and fought and crawled and died.
Pressed into battle field mud
bodies melted, never to be found…
All that remained were their boots and shoes,
maybe a locket, a dog tag, a wedding ring.
With sadness reaching out
no one is just an observer.
Look down.
Shoes and boots cover our feet
as they did back then.
I wiggle my toes
and accept a new connection with the past.
We walk every day in freedom.
Every step we take in our shoes and boots
affirm a new found reverence…
Now wiggle your toes...
