A Blanket Gives Comfort

“A blanket by its very nature gives comfort"

To make an afghan says "I care"

My grandmother made this”
Stewart handed me a small hand made blanket,
a crocheted afghan.

Was it made for a child’s bed?
Was it made to be draped across ones lap on cold nights
as they sat reading in their easy chair?
Years ago, but not so much today,
well-wishers made these wonderful blankets
for family, friends and sometimes even for strangers.

Making an afghan is an act of love.
It gives comfort to whoever uses it.
Crocheted or knitted,
with each stitch the creator says “I love you”.
with each loop of yarn the maker says “I care.”

But what of Stewart’s afghan, the one his grandmother made?
I can’t remember why he gave it to me.
I tried to give it back but time clouded our connection.
Now I am the custodian of his grandmother’s affection.
A stranger to the maker, I cover myself with the warmth of her love.

My Grandmother's "act of love".
