Tombstone/Heartstone

Tombstone/Heartstone

Before still mountains the stone boat sails on the granite lake.

The collie waits on shore beneath the lone tree ripe with leaves that never fall.

An engraved flower made from three hearts girdle the scene,

An endless summer for children taken in the cold.

During the October chill of 1950 the baby died three days after turning two.

Saint Valentines took his sister and brother in 1992.

Beloved children forever wrapped in parent’s sorrow.

Mother and Father, their empty plots wait in the hot July sun.

The mirror-shine of the heartstone reflects a field of white crosses.

And, crouched in a heartlobe, camera in hand,

The photographer is seen, drawn into the image of tragedy.
